Who says it's not sunny here??

Hello friends! It's Hillary...Heidi can't type because her fingers are sunburnt and she can't really move them properly. That probably gives you some idea as to how we spent our day! But we will get to that later...

So. I do believe we slept in until the record hour of 8:20 this morning. (We know how much you love hearing the very minute details of our days here in Maui). We strolled on over to condo 501 for some coffee and breakfast with the parentals, and did our usual morning commentary from the lanai. We really have taken to this game called "Tell Us About Those People." We don't really know how this started, but since Maui is so full of interesting characters, tourists, crazy locals, and wrinkly tanned old people, we feel the need to make a running commentary on some of the people we encounter. Surprisingly, mom is quite good at this game. Who ever knew she had so many tricks up her sleeve! The other morning, we spotted an older woman walking down the beach in her "swimsuit skirt," and we asked mom to tell us a little story about this lady. Well apparently, her name is Jan, and her husband, who is a pilot for a major airline, recently left her after 30 years of marriage for a blonde bombshell stewardess. So here is Jan, who just lost 30 pounds on weight watchers, all alone in Maui. She spent lots of time reading Oprah and Dr. Phil, and she came here to start fresh. She used her husband's frequent flier miles to fly here, and she is going to take him for everything he is worth. She is going to go home to Minnesota and start her very own scrapbooking company. The End. See, this game is very amusing, especially when mom just rattles this crap off out of nowhere. And there are so many people from all walks of life, from all over the country here in Maui, so it's perfect. So after we spent some time playing our new favorite game, we decided that today was going to be a "non-family day." The parentals wanted to go on yet another drive, so us kiddies decided to stay around the condo and enjoy the sunshine. Heidi enjoyed it a little too much...we sat out on the beach in the morning, then went back to the condo to get ready for our day, then went back down and spent a few hours on the lawn listening to music, talking about deep issues (politics, current events, the socioeconomic structure of post-renaissance Russia during the Reagan era, how hot our boyfriends are, etc.) While we were so immersed in conversation, we didn't realize how the sun is about 90% more intense here on the islands. Here is a visual, which pretty much sums it up...

Now, it's not as though Heidi forgot to apply the sunscreen. She wore SPF45. In fact, I very lovingly (in a non-sexual way...well, sort of) rubbed it in (not to be confused with "rubbing one out") onto her butt. I mean...back. Anyways...the suncreen was on the body, however, it wasn't what you would refer to as "evenly applied." The application was a bit shotty, to say the least. She has some blotchiness on the chest/neck region, as well as some very distinct fingerprints on her arms. She also looks like a racoon, with the tan lines from her cool, over-sized Target sunglasses. Back of the legs, ankles, calves...everything's looking pretty great. Maybe Heidi was just in a rush to enjoy the Maui sun, maybe she was too bogged down with political thoughts, or maybe she is just on crack. We don't know. But what we do know, is that she is going to have a FUN plane ride home! Lobster anyone? I, on the other hand, paid for a little bit of tanning bed cancer prior to the trip, so I did not encounter the same tanning problems. But Heidi's sunburn proves that yes, it was sunny in Maui. At least for one day.

So after some sun exposure, we walked across the highway for some yummy dinner at Maui Tacos. We then went to a cheesy little convenient store, bought some snacks and trashy magazines, and went back to the condo to watch the sunset and contemplate whether or not Britney Spears is preganant, or if she just got really super fat.

Sidenote...you may recall a previous blog and some photos about this great lamp that we have on our blogging desk area. Let me give you another visual in case you forgot...

We actually encountered this lamp yesterday at the popular tourist store called Hilo Hattie's (otherwise known as "Big Hawaiian Store Full of Crap not Even made in Hawaii but Perfect to Take Back to your Unwitting Family and Friends"). We were shocked to see that this hottie of a lamp costs $135! We just feel so lucky to be able to experience this lamp for a week, free of charge. Visions of stealing this sexy lighting fixture have definitely crossed my mind.

So tonight is a sad night for us three girls, because tomorrow, we have to check out of our fabulous condo with the Hula Light, and move to the parental's much crappier condo for our last night in Maui. So don't worry...even though we don't have a lot of crazy Patti stories from today, we are sure to have LOTS of blogging comedy tomorrow. Imagine 5 people in one little condo, after already spending 7 days together. Anything can happen! Hopefully the weather will be beautiful tomorrow, as it was today, and we will work on our tans and/or sunburns. And yes, I will go snorkeling with Heidi. She is scared of the octopus and I need to protect her. Plus, she just wants another excuse for me to rub in sunscreen all over her back.

Goodnight and MAHALO!!

  • Well, I must say I am feeling completely left out. I am not sleeping in the "love-nest" room, and no one has rubbed sunscreen on me yet...hopefully my luck will change, but I'm not holding my breath.

They are pretty hilarious, though don't you agree folks?

    Aloha - Laura

  • Dear Friends and Family,
I figured I'd post one last comment before we head home tomorrow. As usually happens, the best weather of the whole trip comes on the last 2 days. I'm not complaining, though, I keep seeing on the news all those people stuck on Oahu and I thank my lucky stars we're on Maui.... All the girls moved into our condo this morning and now it's rather cozy here, so we're heading out to "Fred's" mexican food for dinner. David finished his fascinating book - "Prescription Drugs-The Overdosing of America", (a real page turner). Let me know if you want to borrow it when we get home. Aloha, Patti
